Our Story
Austin Ki-Aikido is one of the oldest dojos in Austin teaching Aikido.
Established in 1983 and dedicated to teaching the principles of mind and body coordination through Ki and Aikido. Our mission is to promote personal development through the art of aikido. And in that pursuit, we strive to preserve the legacy, traditions and spirt of the art that we practice.
1983-1987
After training under Kashiwaya Sensei in Boulder, CO, Michael Price Sensei came to Austin, and founded Austin Ki-Aikido Center.
1987 - 2011
Price Sensei left Austin in 1987 to return to Boulder, and Kathey Ferland Sensei became Senior Instructor.
2011 - Present
When Ferland Sensei retired in 2011, Michael Farris Sensei became Head Instructor.
Dedicated to quality, diversity and practicing what we preach.
We are committed to quality and innovation in our classes and programs, offering meaningful cultural experiences in a Japanese martial art, and building a supportive community. To grow and learn, we question our assumptions and methods. We use our imagination and available resources to innovate, refine and elevate what it means to be a martial arts dojo in these times.
We are a non-profit organization with volunteer teachers with dues used to pay rent and insurance. Our members range in age from their 20s to the mid-70s, are drawn from a variety of backgrounds, and include relative newcomers and decades-long practitioners. We are united in our shared desire to cultivate a community that is open and welcoming to anyone who seeks a personal journey of growth and transformation through practice of the martial arts.
To practice in daily life what we preach in the dojo, the dojo supports Zen Peacemakers, Braver Angels and the Center for Nonviolent Communication. Their objectives are in alignment with purpose of our practice of Aikido.
Austin Ki-Aikido is a member of the Midland Ki Federation, and an authorized dojo of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido Kai (心身統一合気道会), better know in English as the Ki Society.
